This paper aims at characterizing the private facet of scholarly life in Lisbon, with a particular focus on the places and material culture associated with scholar’s intimacy. To that end, it elects as a case study Manuel Caetano de Sousa, one of the most representative Portuguese scholars of the early decades of the 18th century and of what might be named, after Paul Hazard, the Crisis of European Consciousness.
