Hygiene, disease and death in the “Recolhimento” of St. Mary Magdalene de Braga (18th century)

This study analyzes the hygiene practices, disease and death in the Recolhimento of St. Mary Magdalene during the 18th century, highlighting some aspects less worked in the existing literature on these institutions. Considered the specific nature of the institution, taking care of hygiene and health of their admitted it was essential to preserve the health of the community. Hygiene procedures and the attitude towards the disease are part of our analysis, at the same time, we reflect on how they prepared and faced death. In this field, we emphasize aspects such as the sacraments, the accompaniments, the divine offices and place of burial.
