Historical and cultural ties have made the Portuguese the main group of immigrants who settled in Brazil, especially in Rio de Janeiro. Studies that have dedicated themselves to the subject highlight different aspects: the incentives to emigrate, the retention strategies and identity reconstruction in the new country, provided solidarity and sociability, the relations maintained between the two sides of the Atlantic etc. An aspect that has not been analyzed is related to the reception processes of this group in Rio de Janeiro, especially its presence in the Hospedaria de Imigrantes da Ilha das Flores, a device created in 1883, which played a central role in the reception of immigrants from the imperial and republican policies . In this sense, we aim to analyze these processes by relating it to the Hospedaria da Ilha das Flores, in the first decade of operation of this institution, 1883-1892.
