The portuguese historian Joaquim de Carvalho (1892-1958) developed a comprehensive enquiry into the problematic of historical consciousness, paying special attention to its relation with human experience and temporality. What relationship did he maintain with the near past (the 19th century), the present and the future? If the citizen-historian was unquestionably a supporter of a liberal and democratic ideal, can it be said that his historical studies are marked by a predetermined idea of the future ?
To what extent does Joaquim de Carvalho extended the liberal and republican national narrative inherited from the 19th century? In what ways did he go beyond it, raising problems and leaving clues for the future? We intend to study the conceptual tools, the historian's vision of Portugal in the 19th and 20th centuries, his reception as well as the way he related to historical experience and time.
