Since at least the early 19th century, a group of families from the central Algarve has been involved in the extraction, industrial transformation, and trade of cork throughout southern Portugal. The chronology identified, as well as the large geographical scope, makes this social group an important element to consider whenever the genesis and development of the cork business in Portugal are analysed. This article, based on a wide range of sources and bibliography, diachronically and spatially demonstrates the important role that this community played. Thus, in the future, this social group from Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, and Faro should also be considered in the history of the cork sector in Portugal, which still does not happen.
