This text aims to contribute to the knowledge of environments and rites of homage and oath of the chief mayors of Portuguese castles to their lords. Exploring documentation from the chancelleries of the Constable D. Pedro, while governor of the Order of Avis, and the king of Portugal, the author seeks to rediscover the historical and cultural contexts of the staging of the “preitos e menagens” and, also, the evolution of the diplomatic forms used in those oaths that followed the ancient forum of Spain in which the royal hand-kissing prevailed.
