The Sociedade de Concertos da Madeira, founded in 1943 by Luiz Peter Clode and a small group of local political, economic and intellectual elites, is the subject of analysis of this article, which traces its trajectory until the rupture brought about by the Portuguese Revolution of 25 April 1974. This study demonstrates how this private institution consolidated itself as a structured space for cultural production, reception and legitimation, playing a central role in the institutionalisation of Western art music in a peripheral region marked by insularity and by the centralisation of cultural policies under the Estado Novo regime.
Based on the analysis of archival documentation and local periodical press, the article argues that the Sociedade de Concertos da Madeira functioned as a device of elite sociability, contributing to the formation of audiences and to the reinforcement of mechanisms of social distinction. Its activities included the regular organisation of concerts featuring nationally and internationally renowned performers, the foundation of the Madeira Academy of Music, collaboration with national and foreign cultural institutions, and the promotion of festivals and cultural publications. This study thus highlights the relevance of local and regional cultural dynamics in shaping the Portuguese cultural field during the twentieth century.
