With the democratization of Portuguese society and the decolonization process started, efforts were made to reinforce Portugal's presence in the international community.
Portugal returned to UNESCO in 1974, after having abandoned the status of a Member State in 1972, following the approval by UNESCO, of a set of resolutions condemning its colonial policy.
Using archival documentation, namely the Historical-Diplomatic Archives, and the Oliveira Salazar Archive, as well as by consulting Portuguese journals, the article focuses on the relevance of the visit by UNESCO Director-General, Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, Portugal in 1977, seeking to verify which contacts were established and progress in areas under the domain of the international organization.
