Today’s society is at a new crossroads of responsibility that obliges it to reflect on what kind of citizens to educate and for what type of society. The changes taking place in a globalized world demand of all institutions a response that will be capable of facing up to the challenges of a multicultural and complex society. This obliges al of society to form citizens who will be capable of co-existing and sharing the responsibility for the building of a just and tolerant society. This paper defends the model of an integrated society in which all individuals enjoy the same rights and have analogous duties, regardless of place of birth, ethnicity, culture or religion. We thus propose a model of differentiated and intercultural citizenship in which all individuals come together from their differences for the building of a just and caring society. The pedagogical proposals we present for the education of this type of citizen are the following: a change in attitudes towards cultural difference in schools and in society, a change of model in intercultural education, the integration of students coming from immigration, the participation of students in the classroom and in schools, the coresponsibility of families as partners in the educational project, the social fostering of tolerance, the promoting of social responsibility and the acquisition of competences for the intellectual understanding of the keys to the workings of complex societies.Downloads
