Abstract

We approach in this paper two patterns of attitudes in order that all the cultural groups can find the ways to coexist jointly in a multicultural society: the multicultural ideology and the ethnic tolerance. The sample was constituted by two hundred and four participants, oscillating between the 18 and 83 years. The scales of Multicultural Ideology and Ethnic Tolerance showed adequate psychometric properties. The results of this study denote the existence of predominantly positive attitudes in relation to the cultural diversity. The support to the cultural diversity varied according to the gender, but it did not vary according to age, the civil state and the religiosity. The multiculturalism and the tolerance showed positive correlations with the role gender ideology, the integration and self-esteem, and negative correlations with the ageism, the assimilation, the separation, and the marginalization. The psychosocial variables contributed more for the prediction of the attitudes in relation to the cultural diversity that the sociodemographic variables. Some psychopedagogical implications of this survey are discussed.
