Abstract

Although the Normal School of São Paulo has been the subject of many important studies and research in the history of Brazilian education, there are still under explored specific aspects of teacher education with regard to teaching reading and writing. Aiming to contribute to the understanding of these aspects, this article is focused on teachers education for the initial teaching of reading and writing in the context of the attempts to regulate and reform public education that were implemented in São Paulo Province/State, from the 1880s, with the reopening of the Normal School of São Paulo.
