Abstract

An important percentage of the Portuguese population lives in dambreak flood prone areas. Thus the development of methodologies to support dam flood risk management is a practical issue for the public safety. This article is divided in two main areas. First, the assessment of the risk induced by dambreak- floods. The second part of the article is focused on the risk mitigation involving emergency planning: internal emergency planning, at the dam level, and external emergency planning, at the downstream valley.
