Risk management in dams downstream valleys

An important percentage of the Portuguese population lives in dambreak flood prone areas. Thus the development of methodologies to support dam flood risk management is a practical issue for the public safety. This article is divided in two main areas. First, the assessment of the risk induced by dambreak- floods. The second part of the article is focused on the risk mitigation involving emergency planning: internal emergency planning, at the dam level, and external emergency planning, at the downstream valley.
