Não saber reconhecer quando se deve pedir o mayday pode ser um problema para o sucesso de resgate de um bombeiro. O sucesso do pedido de mayday vai aumentar com as ações proactivas do Comandante das Operações e das equipas no terreno, enquanto que o défice de formação leva a que a informação e os procedimentos importantes não sejam valorizados. Declarar um mayday não é só pegar no rádio e pedir ajuda. Primeiro tem de se saber reconhecer um mayday, como se deve declarar um pedido de ajuda e o que fazer de seguida. A abordagem ao mayday na formação dos bombeiros estagiários ainda está numa fase embrionária dado ter sido introduzida na reformulação dos conteúdos de formação no segundo semestre de 2019. O estudo desenvolvido tem como objetivo principal compreender o que é o mayday.
