Not recognizing when to call for ‘mayday’ can be a problem for a firefighter's rescue success. The success of requesting mayday will increase with the proactive actions of the Operations Commander and the teams on the ground, while the training gap means that important information and procedures are not valued. Declaring a ‘mayday’ isn't just about picking up the radio and asking for help. First you must know how to recognize a ‘mayday’ call, how to declare a request for help and what to do next. The mayday approach to training trainee firefighters is still at an embryonic stage as it was introduced in the recast training content in the second half of 2019. The main objective of the study is to understand what ‘mayday’ is.
