Abstract

Human trafficking has existed since the beginning of humanity, but it has been intensifying from year to year, with a more prominent upward kinetics in recent years, as a result of catastrophic events such as wars and the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the main target victims identified are more vulnerable individuals, particularly the unemployed and migrants. Therefore, and as would be expected, it is currently a kind of “pandemic”, spreading worldwide, although with greater incidence in certain areas of the globe. Worldwide, trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation predominates, and the main victims are female. This is followed by trafficking for the purpose of forced labour, which is more relevant for men. In Portugal, most victims are male and they are trafficked for agricultural work. Despite the high number of complaints, it is known that many cases remain underreported, hence the importance of addressing this issue to raise awareness and review strategies for action in the community. This article consists of a review of data from recent years.
