Epigraphic forgery was a common practice by numerous humanists. In Portugal, the fabrications by André de Resende and Father Bernardo de Brito can be mentioned. The strong criticism from 19th century epigraphists and historians, such as Emil Hübner, led to a systematic suspicion of the information provided by those authors, which was copied by many others. However, a new unbiased reading allows us to regard as authentic a significant part of the published milestones.
