An overview of the development of numerical methods for the analysis of Geotechnical problems is presented, with special emphasis on the last three decades. The presentation follows the development of a real, well documented engineering project: the Baixa-Chiado Metro station in Lisbon, built in the nineties. The goal is not to present the project or its analysis, but rather to show the advances in the numerical techniques, in response to the invitation of the Editorial Committee of the Journal. The presentation follows a personal point of view, and this leads to a list of references with a relative high number of sources from the personal experience of the Authors or of their close environment.
