Abstract

The PVC geomembranes are the most common used for dams. The success of a lining system with geomembranes depends on the quality of the seams. The seams have to be evaluated in terms of continuity and mechanical strength, the latter being assessed by peel and shear tests. In this work, the influence of the temperature on the peel strength of the PVC geomembrane seams is studied. Three geomembranes with different thickness and different type of seams were evaluated by peel tests according to ASTM D 6392 standard, at temperatures ranging from 5ºC to 41ºC. Results obtained show that the peel strength of the PVC geomembrane seams did not change significantly with temperature, suggesting it has a small influence on the strength value. The locus-of-break codes of the seams, according the ASTM standard, were also studied. The type of ruptures obtained in this study are not foreseen in standard for two geomembranes.
