Development of a cell for triaxial tests in rigid compacted soils

Abstract

This paper presents a triaxial cell designed to carry out tests on rigid compacted soils. The equipment was designed to facilitate the execution of the triaxial test, allowing the soil shear strength parameters to be determined in laboratories that do not have large infrastructure or even in the field. In the presented cell, the confining pressure is applied by compressed air, there is no backpressure system and it is not possible to monitor the developed pore pressures. The test is run at low speed, in free drainage conditions for water and air, and the shearing step can be performed in a CBR apparatus (strain controlled) or in an adapted oedometer apparatus (load controlled). To check the equipment, tests were carried out, under the same conditions, using the developed and the conventional cells. The results indicate that the new cell can be used for rigid compacted soils, normally used in small earth dams.
