Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the degree of compaction of road embankments, helping to provide flexibility in obtaining the parameters of field compaction. The measurement of electrical conductivity was used to estimate the maximum dry density of the soil in the field. Five random samples of fine soils from different regions close to the state capital of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were subjected to compression tests in the laboratory using three different energies. DC measurements were taken from a voltage of 12V and thus obtained the electrical conductivity for each density and moisture studied. This was followed by a second round of compression tests with five new samples of soil, for expanding the data horizon and checking the result repeatability. The correlations between compaction parameters with electrical conductivity indicated a pattern of behaviour whose correlations could simplify the techniques for soil compaction in the field.
