Influence of atmospheric actions in the functionality of geotechnical structures

Abstract

The consideration of atmospheric actions in the design of geotechnical structures such as slopes, embankments, earth dams and foundations, is justified when the deformations caused by wetting and drying cycles (suction cycles) exceed values which can compromise the functionality of these structures. The computation of the deformations due to atmospheric actions requires, firstly, knowledge of how to consider the atmospheric actions, as well as the hydraulic characteristics of the soil which account for its unsaturated state and, secondly, the use of constitutive models for partially saturated soils because suction must be inclu ded as state variable. Some cases studied at IST are presented as example, after introducing some cases which justify the consideration of climate actions in their analysis.
