In the stabilization of excavation slopes cut in weathered rock masses flexible systems consisting of mesh, steel cables and nailing have been used. Theoretically it is possible to conceive three different modes of operation of such systems: i) an “active” mode, resulting from the application of pre-stressing to the nails, ii) a “reactive” mode, in which the mesh reacts to any outward movement of the rock mass, iii) a "preventive" mode, in which the system's function is merely to prevent the fall of masses. These theoretical modes are appreciated and discussed, which provides some conclusions that contribute to the understanding of the system behaviour.
