New equipment for the determination of geotechnical parameters

Abstract

This paper describes an equipment developed for obtaining of basic parameters of geotechnical behavior of solid waste in landfills which include specific weight, moisture content, on-site capacity, average specific weight of solids, and porosity. All parts of the equipment were designed to collect solid waste samples in the field with minimal disturbance of the sample. In order to check the equipment several samples were collected and the results compared with values from a slot test and in situ determination of the weight by control of the weighing of trucks at the entrance of the landfill and topographic measures of waste cells. The geotechnical parameters obtained from the new equipment showed quite satisfactory results.
