Abstract

This work presents the assessment of the liquefaction susceptibility of a dune sand from Ain Beniam in Alger, Algeria, where, in 2003, the Boumerdès earthquake occurred, causing serious damage to several infrastructures, some of them related to this phenomenon.

Theses studies have been carried out in LabGeo from FEUP, incorporating isotropic compression tests and oedometer tests, as well as undrained cyclic triaxial tests, complementarily recurring to piezoelectric transducers, of bender-extender element type, which allowed the measurement of the velocities of seismic compression (P) and distortion or shear (S) waves. All specimens were prepared using the moist tamping technique for the same moisture content, varying the void ratio to define which are the limit conditions of density, for which this phenomenon is expected to occur.

By this mean it was possible to evaluate the susceptibility to flow liquefaction and cyclic mobility for different state conditions, using different criteria such as material physical compositions, state condition in relation of critical state theory and correlations with the cyclic resistance taking reference to S wave velocities.
