Abstract

The importance of morphological characteristics of sandy soil has been acknowledged for a long time both in applied geology and geotechnical engineering. The shape of the particles plays an important role in the assessment of particle size distribution. Most sizing techniques, however, assume that the sample being measured is spherical, as a sphere is the only shape that can be described by a single number. This paper deals with an image processing technique as a method of particle shape measurement of two sands of two different formations that, in principle, would influence its particle shape. The results from particle shape measurements of the two different sand samples are reported and discussed. The affirmation, widely conside red in Civil Engineering, that river sands, in function of the sediment transportation, would have a higher degree of rounding that sea sands, was not proven by the results obtained from the image processing technique.
