Abstract

Joint strength limit equilibrium models are considered in this paper and their applicability to matched and mismatched discontinuities. The role of the roughness and the way to consider it in models are referred in this paper. Considering the handicaps of limit equilibrium models of forces, a limit equilibrium model of energies is suggested. The effect of average normal stresses applied on discontinuities (σn) is studied. Scale effects in accordance with the referred models are considered. Explanations for the fact of accidents in real life are lesser than expectations considering the limitations of limit equilibrium models are given.
