Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has been recently introduced in Brazil as lightweight material for construction of embankments on soft soils and bridge abutments. Despite this fact, there is no consolidated experience in testing this product from a geotechnical point of view in Brazil. This paper presents the research data on mechanical and hydraulic laboratory tests, characterizing the EPS samples for geotechnical use. The mechanical tests comprised not only static unconfined compression, but also cyclic unconfined compression tests aiming pavement design, and the direct shear test. The hydraulic tests included water absorption and water permeability. The results show that EPS has a great resistance, although its very low density, and good geotechnical properties for applications in geotechnical engineering works
