Abstract

In Portugal the predominant municipal solid waste disposal option in use today is the sanitary landfill. Normally in these landfills the waste is isolated from the ground water by a liner system, and rain water is prevented from entering the waste by a landfill cap, the liquid wastes were banned from landfills and leachate management systems were required to collect and remove liquids from the waste.

This method minimizes the potential environmental impact of the leachate by reducing the generation of leachate and containing the leachate within the landfill.

Another approach, the bioreactor landfill, has received increasing attention over the last several years. A bioreactor landfill changes the goal of landfilling from the storage of waste to the treatment of waste by the controlled addition of non-hazardous liquid wastes or water which accelerates the decomposition of waste and landfill gas generation.

This paper presents an overview of the main types of bioreactor landfill designs and the advantages and disadvantages of this innovative technology over conventional landfills. The issues and/or geotechnical concerns and the recommendations for its application are also presented.
