Behavior of a soil nailing model built in the laboratory

This paper presents a soil nailing model built in the laboratory. Model construction in a metallic rigid box (1.80m x 1.55m x 1.80m) ensured plane strain conditions. Model instrumentation and tests provided information about soil nailing behavior and design parameters. Instrumentation consisted of strain gages on nails and displacement transducers to monitor face and soil mass movements. We analyzed two different situa - tions, before and after surcharge application, and suggested a potential slip surface for each situation. The last experimental step consisted of nail pullout tests followed by their complete extraction. Finally, we analyzed the prototype behavior related to displacements and load in nails.
