Accelerated erosion processes: temporal and spatial behaviour of gully

This work presents an analysis of the accelerated erosion processes and their evolution in terms of temporal and spatial variability in the Tucum stream basin, subdivided into sub basins, supported by sandstones of the Pirambóia Formation, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. This study considered natural and human factors which were responsible for erosion processes and their evolution. This study was based on several kinds of works, such as: photointerpretation, laboratorial and field tests and field works for geological materials (unconsolidated and lithological) mapping, erosion features inventory, assessment of uses and occupation types and infiltration tests. The erosion features were classified into different evolution degrees and for each sub basins were obtained peak discharge (Qp), concentration time (tc) and peak time (Tp). The results obtained from both laboratorial and field works permitted to classify the unconsolidated materials as sandy, and 14 spatial units were mapped considering the 15 unconsolidated materials types arranged into different spatial combinations. This work permitted to conclude that information about unconsolidated material, slopes, landforms, rainfall and uses and occupation types are the main point to design adequate erosion control procedures. They are basic for understanding of the temporal and spatial variability of the erosion processes, which combined with the intrinsic characteristics of the control techniques provide adequate information to elaborate the environmental management of the area to get better economical and social results.
