Soil strength: dilatancy versus effective cohesion

Dilatancy, Effective cohesion, Critical statesAbstract
Through the analysis of basic concepts of the Critical States Soil Mechanics it is shown that the effective cohesion concept is a source of confusions because it gives wrong ideas regarding the fundamentals of shear strength of soils and originates nomenclature for soils which doesn’t help the clarification of this matter. In particular, it is shown that the use of the mechanical strength parameter known as effective cohesion should be abandoned in favour of the concept of dilatancy.
