Stone columns in embankments on soft soils. Analysis by the finite element method

The behaviour of an embankment on soft clayey soils reinforced with stone columns is analysed by a numerical model based on the finite element method. The unit cell formulation is used, which consists of the study of one column and its surrounding soil, with axisymmetric behaviour. The numerical model incor - po rates the Biot consolidation theory (coupled formulation of the flow and equilibrium equations) with cons - ti tutive relations simulated by the p-q-θ critical state model. In order to better understand the geotechnical be - ha viour of the problem, special emphasis is given to the analysis in time, during and after the construction pe - riod, of the settlements, horizontal displacements, excess pore pressures, stress concentration ratio and settle - ment reduction factor.
