Structural behaviour of Portuguese rockfill dams with upstream impervious membranes

Though having a relatively limited number of dams, Portugal has gained a considerable expe rience in design, construction practice and safety analysis of dams, in particular as a result of the contributions derived from the studies carried out by the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC). There are 7 rockfill dams with upstream impervious membrane in Portugal, 4 of them built in the last 15 years. The authors of this paper have been involved in several research studies for all these dams, concerning monitoring and analyses of structural behaviour and safety assessment. In the paper, some aspects of the experience acquired by the LNEC in this kind of rockfill dams are presented, including a brief description of the dams and some of the most significant monitoring results, particularly those related to movements.
