This study shows the applicability of the GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) in the stability analysis of three urban slopes, located in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The slopes were named Patagônia, Planetóides, and Rio Acima, and are composed, respectively, of phyllites, talus, and schist. During rainy seasons, successive landslides occur at these slopes, causing casualties. The use of the GPR made possible to identify deeper structures and layers of the soil and rock masses, and also to analyse the slope fai lure mechanisms. At the Patagônia Slope, the geophysic profiles led to the detection of the depth and geometry of the failure surface of the last planar slide that occurred in the phyllite rock mass. At the Planetóides Slope, it was possible to detect the talus depth that rests on a phyllite rock mass, and also the presence of more than one rotational failure surface. At the Rio Acima Slope, the GPR investigation led to the identification of deeper discontinuities and the schistosity, which are responsible for planar failures. The analysis of the GPR data, together with other traditional slope stability analyses, allowed the identification of the triggering factors and landslide mechanisms that act in the slopes. This study proves that the use of the GPR plays an important part in the slope stability analyses.
