During the last ten years a significant effort has been made to change the waste management policy in Portugal. In particular, all open dumps were closed and replaced by about 38 MSW landfills which have been built. Currently, as the first of these landfills are reaching the limit of their service life it is necessary to begin a new building phase of this type of infrastructures. Given the important role of geomembranes in the MSW landfills bottom liner system performance, it has been considered important to present the lessons learned with the experience of geomembranes placement in more than ten Portuguese MSW landfills, namely in relation to the used materials, the employed techniques and the perceived problems.
