Abstract

The problem of active faults in civil engineering falls within the more general scope of earthquake hazard evaluation concerning the sitting of large critical facilities, such as nuclear plants, large dams and LNG storage. The analysis of the problem of active faults calls mainly for three fields of knowledge – geology, seismology and earthquake hazard evaluation (in the context of civil engineering) – whose application defines an approach

from general to particular, from academic and regional studies to more specific and applied investigations. In this perspective, we need at first to view the problem of active faults against its scientific background and inspect the actual nature of this issue in continental Portugal taking into account its particular situation within the framework of global tectonics.

Then, we can consider the methods deemed most adequate to site-specific studies of large critical facilities allowing exercising judgments and making decisions based on conjugated results of science, techno logy and experience, such as:

– To decide if we have to worry about faults;

– To recognize an active fault;

– To decide if a fault poses an intolerable hazard of surface ground rupture.
