Abstract

This research is directed to the analysis of the influence of the rate of loading or displacement on the shear strength of three tropical residual soils from the North Forest Zone of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The laboratory testing program encompassed the realization of direct shear tests performed in natural soil specimens at three different rates of displacement. From a practical engineering point of view, the laboratory testing data support that the rate of displacement does not affect significantly the shear strength of the tested soils.
