Offshore geotechnics in Brazil applied to the oil industry

The aim of this paper is to present an account of the fundamentals and the state-of-the-art of geotechnics, as developed in Brazil to meet the demands of the oil and gas exploration industry in maritime fields. The author approaches the different phases of geological and geotechnical reconnaissance inherent to the studies of foundations of offshore structures point out the main aspects that should guide the planning of a geotechnical investigation campaign. Many solutions that are adopted in Brazil for the execution of geotechnical investigations are presented, ranging from shallower water depths, near the coast to deep waters with a focus on the genuinely Brazilian solution using the diving bell. The diving bell is an equipment for investigations in water depths around 36 m and in exceptional cases 50 m, being the only solution for the execution of borings in near shore zone. The author has been actively taking part in the development of geotechnics in the oil industry since the beginning of the 70's.
