Rock Mechanics

Abstract

The advent and evolution of roc mechanics as independent subjects are briefly described as well as its affinities with other subjects. The reasons for the rapid growth of this new branch of mechanics are stated, and some typical instances of its numerous applications in the field of engineering and geosciences are given.  The paper ends with the definition of the scope of rock mechanics.
