The exploration of large underground cavities has always a long-term consequence, which is the subsidence phenomenon. Although these surface deformations are seldom harmful in the case of desert or unprofitable areas, its consequences can be serious in some specific areas or give rise to unwanted troughs, sometimes creatin6 unpleasant topographical changing. Besides, its evaluation can be a
valuable means of accessing tl1c underground mechanical behaviour of unreachable cavities. Beginning
with simple analytical solutions, this overview proceeds witl1 some numerical solutions proposed to deal with the subsidence above very deep cavities.
