Abstract

This paper presents the results obtained in geophysical studies developed in an area used for waste disposal from 1974 to 1990, in the Ribeirão Preto city, Northeast of São Paulo state, Brazil. Electrical Vertical Sounding and Dipolo-Dipolo Electrical Profiling were used in this study. They presented good results to define and delimit the water level depth and the direction of the groundwater flow and plume of contamination, as well as the dimensions of the waste portion. Toe results of the geophysical techniques applied produced allowed planning more adequately the monitoring and choice of proper clean up procedures for each site. ln Brazil, these geophysical techniques can be applied in thousand of sites, where wastes have been disposed.
