A typical strutted excavation in soft clay is modelled using an elastoplastic finite element code. The results are analysed with emphasis on earth pressures redistribution by arching and on the parameters that contribute to that phenomenon. A simple structural analogy is proposed to interpret the soil-wall interaction.
