Horizontal load test on free head pile

The foundation of the two main towers of the international bridge over Guadiana river consists of groups of large diameter piles crossing a thick alluvial layer. ln order to give support to the design studies concerning the effect of horizontal loads an in situ test was carried out on a concrete pile,

0.80 m diameter, exclusively built for that purpose. Details on the test performance and the interpretation of results obtained are supplied.
