Contribution to the history of Geotechnique m Portugal

Abstract

The paper recalls how past events led to the starting up of geotechnical studies in the areas of Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics and Engineering Geology.

It describes the development of Geotechnique in Portugal since the end of the forties, emphasis being laid upon the played by the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, Ordem dos Engenheiros and So­ ciedade Portuguesa de Geotecnia.

Some examples illustrate the introduction of the Geotechnique into the technologic structure of the

country.
