Abstract

A limit equilibrium method for slope stability analysis, apllicable to potencial slip surfaces of any shape, is described. The method ensures that static equilibrium is fully satisfied, but unlike other "accurate" methods it permits the calculation of the factor of safety by means of the solution of a single non-linear equation. ln order to remove the static indeterminacy, the pattern of variation of the interslice shear force across the sliding mass is assumed to be specified. A particular shape of the interslice shear force distribution is proposed. Two example problems, which illustrate the application of the method, are presented. Comparisons are made with the Morgenstern-Price method.
