Using a mathematical model based on the finite element method, the behaviour of a tied-back retaining wall under marginal stability conditions for vertical forces applied by the anchors, is studied. The fundamental parameters in the problem are pointed out, as well as the limitations of the standard methods of computing the bearing capacity of the soil for that type of loading. Modifications of the design methods are suggested.
