Soft soils from S. André Basin (Sines Area) geology and geomechanic characterization

Abstract

 ln the Sines Area there are quatemary alluvium deposits, which include the existence of very soft and soft compressive clayey and peat soils.  The S.  André lagoon site is an example of the ocurrence of this type of terrain.

ln this paper the geologic and geotechnical characteristics of the alluvium deposits from S. André are described and a discussion on the influence of the geological factors upon their engineering behaviour and on the reliability of the testing methods is provided.

The data used comprises results of geological drilling, «in situ» testing (SPT, dutch cone and vane. test) and laboratory testing (particle size analysis, Atterberg limites, X-ray diffraction, oedometer and triaxial shear strength tests)
