The reasons that make concrete pavements be in widespread use in Westem Europe are given. The first experiences with rigid pavements in the Azores are mentioned. The work that preceeded the execution of rigid pavements and the calculation of their thickness is described. The typical cross-seçtion of the road is presented. Considerations are made about the concrete, the Belgian specifications, joint sealing, slab displacement control, and the filters for preventing pumping. Finally, a comparison is made between the costs of the two pavements (rigid and flexible).
