The S. Domingos-morgavel tunnel ano geotechnique

Abstract

After a brief description of the S. Domingos-Morgavel tunnel, the different steps in its geotechnical appreciation during the preliminary study, preliminary design, design and construction stages are enumerated. A description is made of the different survey and control techniques used, as well as of the main results achieved. The most important conclusions drawn as regards the quality of the rock mass to be driven through are presented.

ln brief too, the technologic methods so far used to construct the tunnel are discussed, attention being called to the shortages of these methods in the light of the geotechnical information available.  Some problems encountered as the construction progressed are reported, as well as the way in which they were overcome.

The most significant departures from the original planning were described together with the major changes introduced in the course of the work. Lastly it is shown that both departures and changes could have been minimized if greater interest had been put in profiting from the potentialities of Geotechnique.
