Deformability Modulus of the Material Used to Fill Up Metalic Cofferdams

Abstract

For the design of the covering slabs of the new pier for La Guaira (Venezuela) harbour constructed with metalic cofferdams, the value 50MPa was estimated for the deformability modulus of the "tout venant" used to fill up the above cofferdams. With the purpose to check this estimated value a loading test was performed on one of the slabs. The results of this test was 45MPa in accordance with the deflections antecipated by the computer. Due to the large size of the slab, about 450m2, the loading of one comer at its thinest section was decided.
